Book Blitz: One Hell of a Ride by Ju Ephraime

One Hell Of A Ride
by Ju Ephraime

Blurb:
When tough-as-they-come Joe Cariello appears on her doorstep claiming he used to know her grandfather, Cassie Sorrento is skeptical. To begin with, her grandfather was twice, if not three times, Joe’s age. Second, Joe appears to be a drifter, going where the wind blows him, and third, he’s too damn ruggedly good looking for her peace of mind.
Joe thinks he’s hit pay dirt when he first sees Cassie standing in the doorway of his old friend’s cabin. He has no idea his friend has been murdered and he’ll be viewed as the most likely suspect. He’s a drifter, not a killer. Now he’s determined to find out what happened to his old friend, and if it means he has to work alongside Cassie, he’ll welcome it. Now he’s wondering, are his drifting days over, and more importantly, can he convince Cassie that they are? Joe realizes he’ll give up drifting in a lickety-split if he can have Cassie just for one night.

Snippet:
“Don’t you think it’s time that you and I had a little chat?” he said, the huskiness of his voice making it sound more gravelly than normal.

“What’re you doing? Give me my hat,” was all she said as she looked up into the intense obsidian eyes that were staring into her face.

Time seemed to stand still as Joe focused on Cas’ eyes. Enormous, tilted like a cat’s, light steel gray with dark orbs, unusual and mesmerizing. He felt their impact like a kick in the gut. He had envisioned her eyes all different colors, but never once had he imagined the light steel gray that was currently looking up at him. He had to admit; they suited her. They were the most beautiful eyes he’d ever seen. They almost seemed to glow; it put him in mind of quicksilver. That was how bright and silvery gray they were. Joe felt as if he were drowning in her inquiring gaze. Abruptly his mouth covered hers. He could tell he had taken her by surprise because her lips were apart, and he took the opportunity to sweep in and taste her. God! The taste of her! It was as he’d imagined and more. He shuddered heavily and thrust his tongue deep into her mouth again and again. He wanted to devour her.

Excerpt #1:
Her first text message made me smile.
Her second made my dick hard, which made me feel like a dirty old man.
It wasn't the message itself; it was the confidence she had to send it in the first place. The fiery personality at thirteen was cute and endearing. At nineteen, it was fucking sexy as hell.
Hold it together, Professor.
I thought about Julia over the years because the last time I saw her, it broke my fucking heart to pieces and pissed me off.
I felt guilty because I knew what a prick my best friend had been to his family. I saw it daily and never had the balls to call him on it. He led and I followed him into some seedy dark places. Places his family had no clue about, places that broke up my own marriage six years ago. I was betrayed in the worst way and had no desire to have a woman on my arm.
I required one in my bed on occasion.
But never a student.
Excerpt #2:
"What are you doing here, Jules?"
"I wanted to see you. We haven't talking in a few days, and I just wanted to check in." I laid my hands flat against the books; they offered comfort.
"You should have called." He stared off toward his desk.
"Are you excepting company?"
"No. It's been a long week; I'm tired and I have a headache."
I stepped toward him, stood a few inches away, but he didn't drop his hands.
"You should let me rub your temples." I reached up, and he grabbed my hand and stepped away.
"Don't."
"You don't even want me to touch you?" I asked over the grapefruit size lump in my throat.
"Jules, please just go."
"No. Why?" I asked. "I just want to be near you. Why is that so bad?"
"It's not bad, but I just can't."
"Why? What is it?"
"You wouldn't understand."
"Then make me understand."
His eyes flashed, and he stepped toward me. I welcomed the warmth. His demeanor softened for a split second. I saw it. I felt it, but then it was gone, and he slumped back on the bookshelves with his chin to his chest.
"I can't," he said.
The words crushed me yet his tone scared me. I stood in front of him. He shuddered but didn't look at me. I bent down, so I could see his eyes.
"Why?" I asked. "What are you afraid of?"
He lifted his head. He reached up and ran the back of his hand down my tear-soaked face.
I shuddered.
"I'm afraid if I tell you, if I show you what I am and what I'm truly like, then you'll stop looking at me like that." His hand dropped to his side. "I'd really miss that."
"How do I look at you?" I asked. I knew the answer but wanted to hear how he saw it.
"Like I'm a king. You have the ultimate faith in me. I don't deserve it." His head dropped again.
"Then earn it," I said, my tone stronger than I felt on the inside. Inside, I felt like I might crumble any minutes if he didn't touch me.
"Oh, Julia ... How?" He raised his head.
I spotted a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
"Keep it simple. What do you need me to do?"
His eyes grew dark as he approached me. I backed up into the bookshelf, and he placed his hands on either side of my head.
"Do as I say?"
I nodded. My heart raced, and I was sure he could hear it thumping like crazy. He placed his hand over my heart, and I drew in a sharp breath. His fingers tapped against my sternum.
"Look at me."
I turned my head up and stared into his eyes. His hands rose and surround my throat. He didn't squeeze, but panic set in.
"I'm not going to hurt you, Jules." He pressed a little tighter. "I need you to trust me."
"Okay."
"Do you trust me?"
I nodded.
"Say it."
"I trust—" Before I finished the sentence, his lips were on mine.

Review: Fit for You (Truhart #4) by Cynthia Tennent

Small towns have the biggest hearts.

In the split-second it takes to injure her knee, Lily Shue’s life goes from rising star to small town reject. Forced to give up her role as a trainer on a hit reality fitness show, she takes a job in tiny Truhart, Michigan. By the time Lily arrives in the one horse town—on her crutches—she is well and truly fed up. And then a maniac nearly hits her with his garbage truck . . .

Edgar “Edge” Callaghan knows a little bit about broken bones—and broken dreams. A former skier and Olympic hopeful, Edge’s athletic career ended in injury, and took his love life with it, leaving him to bum around Truhart doing the occasional odd job, including driving his uncle’s teddy bear covered garbage truck. But something about the feisty new brunette in town tempts him to lace up his sneakers again. Even if it’s just to prove her wrong about him. And maybe to prove something to himself.

Lily and Edge may have started off on the wrong foot, but before long they realize they’re both moving in the same direction . . . toward each other.

Terri's Thoughts

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!  The book has just been released.

Although this is part of a series, this story can be read as a stand alone.  I had actually read the second installment, Skinny Dipping Season, and I had a difficult time matching these two stories as the same series.  So no worries if you are starting out with this story.

As someone who has been on a bit of a fitness craze as of late, I thought the plot of this story would be right up my alley.  The idea of trying to teach an entire town/community about fitness and how to lose weight is an interesting albeit difficult storyline.

The story of Lily and Edge is pretty much typical for what you would expect in this genre although it had some pieces of humor mixed in to it.  Lily's reaction to Edge when she first met him was hysterical.  I would have thought he was a serial killer as well.  A shaggy bearded guy driving a garbage truck covered in stuffed animals would have me running for cover also.

At the end of the day this is a feel good story with an eclectic cast of characters.  The only thing I can liken it to is that the townsfolk is like the island of misfit toys.  What an odd bunch of people for sure.  They actually helped to make the story.

Now I must rant for one minute.  This is not necessarily about the story or the writing however since Edge was portrayed as this bearded hunk I must vent.  I am so over the lumbersexual craze that seems to be taking over.  Sorry folks but shaggy beards are not attractive.  I had a hard time reconciling the physical description of Edge with the light hearted humorous guy that he was.  Men...just start shaving, the look is not attractive!  I digress.

Choose this story if you are looking for some light hearted fun with a sense of community.

Review: Eye Candy by Jessica Lemmon

Jacqueline: As an adult woman--and the vice president of a marketing firm--I shouldn't be waiting by my office window to ogle the mystery man who jogs by every morning at 11:45. Sure, he's a gorgeous, perfect specimen of the human race, but I can't bring myself to hit on a total stranger. However, my best friend-slash-colleague Vince Carson thinks I should do more than talk to the guy. In fact, he's borderline obsessive about "getting me laid." (His words.) But the more time we spend together, the more it's clear: The one I'm falling for is Vince.

Vince: Jackie Butler's got it bad for some pompous, over-pumped A-hole who struts his stuff past her window. That doesn't bother me. I know she deserves nice things. What does bother me is that she friend-zoned me big-time last year, so I can't ask her out myself. But what if I set her up with Mr. Steroids? Then, when he breaks her heart, I can swoop in and save her like the nice guy I am. Everything's going according to plan . . . until we share a ridiculously epic kiss. And suddenly anything is possible.

Series: Real Love #1
Genre: Romance

Kristine's Thoughts:

** I received an advanced readers copy from Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**

Eye Candy is the first book in the new Real Love series by Jessica Lemmon. I have read some of her other books so I was excited to check out this new series.

I am a sucker for a good love story and I am an even bigger sucker for a friends to lover story. From early on I could tell that this was shaping up to satisfy all of the things I crave most in a good romance.

Jacqueline and Vince were both divorced and shared the roll of vice president of their marketing firm. They helped each other through the tough times after their divorces and became really good friends. They would spend weekends together eating food and binge watching movies together. From the very first page it was easy to tell that the two were attracted to each other but for numerous reasons they considered each other off limits. When Jacqueline developed a crush on the the runner that passed her window every day Vince saw his opportunity to finally get her to see him as more than just a friend. With the pretence that he was going to help Jackie "get the guy" he turned up the heat to make her notice him instead.

I liked both Jackie and Vince and I loved the chemistry that the two had but I didn't always like their actions. Of course this is fiction and everything has to be complicated but I found that there was a lot of dishonesty and a little manipulation. In other words, they were both a little immature at times which kind of bugged me. However I did enjoy the fact that they were both divorcees and how this book showcased their insecurities and the difficulties they had with trust because of it.

I think that this is going to be a series that I will love to follow. I'm really hoping that the next book will be about a certain best friend who I got a glimpse of in this book. Fingers and toes are crossed for that!
