Kristine's Review:
* I received an e-copy of this book from Patchwork Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
I decided to read this book because my 12 and 14 yr old daughters have it on their to-read list and thought I would review it for them. As much as I hate to admit it, I am not a young adult and had to keep that in mind when putting my thoughts together. When rating this book I tried to put myself in my daughters shoes and give it an honest rating from what (I feel) would be their perspective.
Sia was a fast and easy read for me. It was basically about getting a second chance to make things right and change the course of ones life. There was a strong message hidden within the pages of this book that youth today could really benefit from. Sia was a bad girl turned good courtesy of her fugue amnesia and the story revolved around the events that changed her life. It dealt with things like bullying and stereotypes that teenagers deal with on a daily basis.
Some might say that the story is a little over done, cheesy and predictable but you have to remember that this is a YA book and geared towards a YA audience. As a person well past my YA years (but still loves YA books) I might agree but for a young teen I can definitely see the appeal. I know that both of my girls would enjoy it.
I don't feel like this book would be for an older teenage audience. It is pretty squeaky clean, no language and no sex. Although there is a little bit of romance I feel that older teenagers would find it too boring. Younger teenagers like my children would probably really like it. I would have no issues letting my girls read this book and I am pretty sure they would like it.
This is Josh Grayson's debut YA novel and I think he has a bright future ahead!
