Review: The Undulating Mountain by C.P.T. Jennings

When their parents fail to return home to their Manhattan apartment one evening, twelve year old Sophie Penn and her brothers William and Tom are left to navigate on their own in a city where technology has become unreliable, discombobulated bands of people roam the streets, fires erupt spontaneously on the rivers, and no one seems to be in charge. On a journey that takes them from the changed streets of their home city to the no less changed and mysterious Undulating Mountain where their grandmother Lupine lives, the children seek to right their out-of-balance world. It is a journey fraught with danger, and full of wonder and new friends.

Kristine's Thoughts:

I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

I tried and tried to like this book and didn't give up on it as much as I was tempted to on numerous occasions. It isn't that there isn't a story within the pages, it is more that it is very slow in being told. The first half of the book was painfully slow. It wasn't until I was at the halfway point that I found the story more interesting and was actually wanting to know what happens. I think the problem for me was in the characters. They were not developed enough for my liking and therefore I wasn't overly invested in what happened to them. The premise of the story was good it just didn't excite me as I would have expected with this kind of story.
