Beau: Six years. That’s how long I spent behind bars for a crime I didn’t commit—the murder of the woman I loved. Now I’m free, but life on the outside is a different kind of prison. I don’t know who I am or who I want to be. At least I have my sister, Cora. She never stopped believing in me. She even got me a job at the private investigation agency that cleared my name. And then Vera Swain walks into Nash Security and Investigations and kicks my world on its ass.
Vera: There’s only one thing that would make me come out of hiding after two years on the run: finding my sister. I made the mistake of telling a monster about her, the same monster who beat me and broke me. Now I’m forced to confide in Beau Hollis of Nash Security and Investigations. He looks at me like he knows me—the real me. He sees too much, makes me feel too much. The pleasure he offers is exciting and addictive. But I can’t fall for him . . . because my love could get us both killed.

* I received an advanced readers copy from Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**
Atone is the second book in the Recovered Innocence series but can be read as a stand alone. I did have the opportunity to read Vindicate first yet I still feel that a reader could pick this book up with no issues at all. Having followed this series from the beginning I can say that I think I liked this book better than the first one. It seemed like Yarnall was able to get some of the kinks out and it showed.
Vera came to Nash Security looking for help in finding her younger sister. Beau immediately recognised her as a person who had been through a lot and was lost but hiding it just like him. Although the initial screening proved that she was lying about some things, he hid them so that his sister and the rest of Nash Security would help her.
This story was deeper, darker and sexier than Vindicate and I was flying through the pages. I wanted to know all of Vera's secrets and the terrible stuff that happened to her. Was she at risk? Was she putting Beau at risk? Would they find her sister? Was somebody going to get hurt? I was really drawn to the suspense aspect of the story.
I really liked Beau so it was a little difficult for me to like Vera because I was so afraid that she was going to hurt him or get him hurt. They had an almost insta-love which I tend to struggle with but it was definitely sexy and the pages heated up quickly. Even though I liked Beau better than Vera I was still in their corner. I wanted a happily ever after for them and was hoping they would get it.
Overall I really liked this fast paced romantic suspense and I am enjoying the series thus far. I can't wait to see what Nash Security takes on next!
Check out my thoughts on Vindicate here.
