After being held hostage during a robbery at the local convenience store, seventeen-year-old Edie finds her attitude about life shattered. Unwilling to put up with the snobbery and bullying at her private school, she enrolls at the local public high school, crossing paths with John. The boy who risked his life to save hers.
While Edie’s beginning to run wild, however, John’s just starting to settle down. After years of partying and dealing drugs with his older brother, he’s going straight—getting to class on time, and thinking about the future.
An unlikely bond grows between the two as John keeps Edie out of trouble and helps her broaden her horizons. But when he helps her out with another first—losing her virginity—their friendship gets complicated.
Meanwhile, Edie and John are pulled back into the dangerous world they narrowly escaped. They were lucky to survive the first time, but this time they have more to lose—each other.

Kristine's Thoughts:
** I received an advanced readers copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**
This book started out with a bang...literally! I was drawn in and captivated after a few short sentences. The emotional charge I felt from was immediate and beyond what I can fully describe adequately.
Edie and John were caught in the middle of a brutal and deadly crime that I could only imagine. Both witnessed some gruesome stuff and both were injured in the events that took place. In my opinion, the writing was at its best at the very beginning when this took place. I could see everything and feel the emotions so clearly that I felt like I was there. Always a good sign in my book.
Weeks later the two of them find themselves attending the same school and it was no surprise that they were drawn to each other. They experienced something horrific that bonded them in a way that nobody else would be able to understand. Both Edie and John had baggage though, making their friendship not always the easiest and when feelings started to develop it became even more complicated.
This book brought out my inner (much) younger self. It made me gush over the budding romance and blush over the sexual tension between Edie and John. It was sometimes dark and sometimes sweet but always emotional and I was definitely feeling it the whole way through. I have no doubt that young readers will love this book and fall in love with Edie and John.
Honestly, I feel like the synopsis gives away a little too much of the story so I won't re-tell it again. Instead I will say that this book had the emotional punch with a highly engaging plot that I loved to devour. The characters were a joy to get to know even when they weren't at their best. I loved the fact that Edie was not the typical girl found all too often in these types of stories. She had flaws both physically and emotionally which made her relatable and so easy to like. John had his flaws as well but I can see him making a few book boyfriend lists.
This was the first book by Kylie Scott for me but it definitely won't be my last. If the rest of her books are like this one then I am in for a real treat!
