Review: The Last Good Cowboy (Morgan Ranch #3) by Kate Pearce

The Morgan ranch has seen its share of bad times. But as the four Morgan brothers are drawn back to their childhood home, the nightmares of their past give way to the promise of a new beginning…Ry Morgan has always had a thing for Avery Hayes—one more hope his twin wrecked for him, pretending to be Ry to kiss her at the high school prom. Eight years later, Ry has had enough: he’s quitting the pro rodeo circuit, moving home to California to mend fences, and letting his brother clean up his own messes for a change. Reclaiming Avery’s stolen kiss is at the top of his agenda…

But Avery has changed. Her rodeo career ended with a fall that left her lucky to be alive, let alone walking. She hasn’t been on a horse since, and between surgeries and fighting off everybody’s pity she hasn’t done much else either. Ry is strong, confident, and sexy as hell—exactly what she thought she wanted at seventeen. Now, she’ll have to protect the safe space she’s made for herself—or risk it all for a dream she thought would never come again…

Terri's Thoughts

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!  The expected publication date is April 25th, 2017.

I must be upfront before continuing on with this review.  I broke my rule to read this story.  While I read a wide variety of genres and consider myself open minded, I do have a pretty set in stone rule about avoiding any novels with the word cowboy in the title.  Other words I stay away from are rogue, billionaire and usually any reference to royalty of any kind.  In my head I have (perhaps unfairly) ranked them all as too cheesy to consider.  I'm not sure why I broke from tradition on this story however I am really glad I did as I enjoyed this one.

This is the third story in the Morgan series.  I had not read the first two prior to reading this, perhaps because they had cowboy in the title,  so it is safe to say that this can be read as a stand alone.  That being said, there is a sub plot that appears to be a continuation from the previous stories.  Although it does not necessarily impact the enjoyment of this one, it certainly made me curious about what came before.

To be honest, not a lot happens in this story and that is ok.  It is really a story about two people coming together while each trying to battle/conquer the ghosts of their past.  Both Ry and Avery were likable characters that I was rooting for from the beginning.  The fact that the backdrop of the story centers around a small town held additional appeal for me.  It is nice when the characters all know each other and look out for each other.  The relationship between the brothers also held my interest.

My guess is that there will be at least one more story in this series (maybe more) as there is still one more brother.  There is also some loose ends concerning the back story that has occurred throughout the series.  I think I would like to see the remainder of this series through!

So.....if you are like me, put aside your prejudice surrounding cowboy series, ignore the terrible book covers and just give it a try.  You may just be surprised.
