Love Like Ours is the third book in the Sugar Lake series but can be read as a stand alone. I did not read the first two books in the series and was able to follow along. I do think that I would have benefited slightly from reading them only to know the secondary characters and their relationship to Talia a little better.
What I liked most about Love Like Ours was the relationship between Derek and his father. In fact, I liked it better than the relationship between Derek and Talia. I liked that the story took on the important subject of being an adult caregiver and the challenges that stem from it. It gave what would have been a typical and average contemporary romance a little more depth. Most of my enjoyment of this story came from this aspect of the book.
I struggled a little bit at first with Derek and Talia's relationship. It was a little too inta-love for my liking. Although I did eventually get behind them it took me a little while to catch up. The anticipation and the build up to them getting together was missing and that is what I enjoy most in a contemporary romance. They were whispering sweet nothings before my brain was ready for it to happen. Once it caught up, I was behind them all the way. Derek and Talia's relationship was oozing sweetness and romantic gestures but don't be fooled. There was also plenty of heat to steam up the pages for readers that like their romances a little hotter.
This was the first book by Melissa Foster for me but I don't think it will be the last. I look forward to what she comes out with next.
