Review: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

15 hrs and 1 min
Alaska, 1974. Unpredictable. Unforgiving. Untamed.

For a family in crisis, the ultimate test of survival.

Ernt Allbright, a former POW, comes home from the Vietnam war a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes an impulsive decision: He will move his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America's last true frontier.

Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents' passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown.

At first, Alaska seems to be the answer to their prayers. In a wild, remote corner of the state, they find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the Allbrights' lack of preparation and dwindling resources.

But as winter approaches and darkness descends on Alaska, Ernt's fragile mental state deteriorates and the family begins to fracture. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in 18 hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: They are on their own. In the wild, there is no one to save them but themselves.

In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty and resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska - a place of incomparable beauty and danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night audiobook about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.

Narrator: Julia Whelan
Kristine's Thoughts:

Kristin Hannah did it again. She penned another novel that completely captivated me and threw me right in the middle of the story. I listened to this book and thank goodness it had an amazing narrator. I have listened to a couple of other books that Julia Whelan has narrated and she is fabulous. The narrator can truly make or break the book.

This book has been out for some time so I won't go into too much detail. There are literally thousands of reviews that do that. What I will do is tell you what it was that I loved so much about this book besides the general plot. This book took you to Alaska in the 1970's literally. With the descriptions and attention to detail it made the reader feel like they were there. You could almost feel the cold and isolation. A very vivid picture of the location was painted. Not only was it easy to visualise but it was fascinating. Alaska was just as much a character as the people in the book.

As far as the characters went, I ached for Leni and Cora. I went through many emotions while listening to their story unfold. There was anger, frustration, fear, sadness and hope. The resilience of these two was more than I could possibly put in words. Their story was not easy. Their lives were not easy.

I can't recommend this book enough. It was truly a wonderful and captivating story that I won't forget any time soon.

Kristin's highly anticipated new release, The Great Alone, will be published on February 6, 2018 (St. Martin's Press). The novel, an epic love story and intimate family drama set in Alaska in the turbulent 1970's is a daring, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival and the wildness that lives in both nature and man. It has been listed as one of the most anticipated novels of the year by The Seattle Times, Bustle.com, PopSugar, Working Mother, Southern Living, and Goodreads.

The Nightingale is currently in production at Tri Star, with award-winning director Michelle MacLaren set to direct. Review: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, a New York Times Book Review Top Ten Book, National Book Award finalist, more than two and a half years on the New York Times bestseller list

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the stunningly beautiful instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.

Kristine's Thoughts:

I am very picky when it comes to my audio books. I like to pick ones that are well rated because they are a little more time consuming and I don't want to waste my time on something bad. There are a few reasons why I decided to listen to All the Light We Cannot See. First of all, it has over seven hundred thousand reviews on Goodreads and is highly rated. Second, my sister and other half of this blog read it and loved it. Lastly, it is a WW11 historical fiction which I love.

I am speechless. I literally just finished listening to this book before sitting down to write this and I don't know what to say. It was amazing. I felt it to my core as I was listening. When it was nearing the end I actually found myself holding my breath. I did not want it to end.

I won't re-tell the story as it has been done a thousand times and there is no way I can do it justice. I'll just say that there are two distinct voices and point of views within the pages. Marie Laure and Werner were on opposite sides of the war and had totally different upbringings and struggles. Werner was an orphaned boy from Germany who was destined for the mines before his intellect and interest in radios changed his path and landed him in training with the Nazi Youth. Marie Laure was a blind girl from Paris who lived with her devoted father who tried his best to make her as independent as possible.

This book showcased the fact that not all things are black and white and that every person has a story. It was beautifully written and unique. I have read hundreds of WW11 fiction and this story is completely different than any I've read before. It was highly emotional and both the story and characters were extremely well developed.

I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. This book is highly rated and for very good reason. It deserves to be. I am going to add one more great rating to the list. Everything about this book is going to stick with me for a very long time. I highly recommend it.

Review: Finding Grace by K.L. Slater

This morning, my daughter sat right here, munching her breakfast, too excited to finish it. Now, she is missing.

The day after her ninth birthday, Lucie and Blake Sullivan agree, for the very first time, to let their daughter, Grace, make the four-minute walk back home alone from a friend’s house just down the street.

They joke with friends about hiding behind bushes to ensure she is safe. But the joke turns sour when Grace does not appear.

Despite the best efforts of the police and local community, Grace seems to have vanished into thin air. With hope fading fast, Lucie knows she can rely on her husband to support her through such dark times. That is until the day she makes a shocking discovery, hidden in Blake’s desk, and suddenly she begins to doubt everything she knew about the man she married.

But Lucie harbours a terrible secret of her own. One that she has never shared with anyone, even Blake …

And as the search for Grace reaches fever pitch, Lucie receives a terrifying message. If she is ever to see Grace again, Lucie has no choice but to face the past she tried hard to bury forever. And she must do it alone.

Expected publication: February 14th 2019 by Bookouture
Kristine's Thoughts:
** I received an advanced readers copy from Bookouture via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**

Finding Grace was a very quick and easy book to read. It was one of those books that you find yourself saying "just one more chapter" to and then before you know it you are done and nothing else is.

The very first time that Lucie and Blake let their daughter walk home by herself from her friends house she disappeared. Even though they had safeguards in place and a plan to secretly watch her, she still vanished without a trace. Finding Grace followed Lucie and Blake through the heartbreaking hours and days after her disappearance where questions arose and secrets were discovered. It was told in the present and through flashbacks to Lucie's past to paint the full picture.

I will admit that I thought I had it all figured out early on. In my head I thought that some of the events that happened were just too convenient. The opportunity for Grace to vanish was the smallest possible amount of time so it had to be a part of a well thought out plan right? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. You need to read it to find out. There were plenty of secrets being kept by all parties involved. As the story progressed the direction it was heading became clear and it took most of the guessing out of it. That's not to say that there weren't a few surprises.

The best way to describe this book was that it was like a roller coaster. It started slow as it climbed its way up and then rocketed down and around a few twists and turns before it came to its inevitable end. Most of the excitement was definitely in the last chapters of the book. It was truly entertaining and I'm glad that I buckled myself in and was able to enjoy the ride.

Except the sizzling attraction that drew him to Mira is still fierce, and staying away from her is a lot harder than he ever expected…

She isn’t expecting to run into him at the physical therapist’s office, where he’s learning to live with an above-the-knee amputation.
She can’t blame him for being a grumpy jerk under the circumstances, but it would be a lot easier to ignore him if she didn’t desperately need child care for her son.
And if Jake didn’t make her feel brand new and dazzlingly alive.
She knows she needs to protect her son’s feelings—but no matter how hard she tries, she can’t forget the long, sweet nights she and Jake spent learning each other’s bodies and each other’s secrets…

Plus, Alia hurt him once, and he’s afraid she’ll do it again.
Alia knows she has to ignore her feelings for Nate. Her job is to take care of him professionally, so she has to keep her hands on the parts of him she has a right to touch. Besides, when she lied to him two years ago, she forfeited any claim she could ever have to his heart.
Now she just has to find some way to stick to her guns, leave him alone, and do her job. Even—or especially—when he’s shirtless on the table in her office…

To Have and to Hold (Returning Home, Book Three)

He doesn’t remember her. She cherishes every moment of their time together. Is there any hope for a second chance?
Hunter Cross has lost a year. There’s a gap in his memory, and the woman who is living in his house has disappeared into it. He slept with her, fell for her, loved her—and he doesn’t remember any of it.
He knows he should send her away—except for one little thing. At night, when she creeps into his bed, his body remembers hers.
Trina Levine is heartbroken, alone with her memories. Hunter won’t claim any of it—not the joyful days, not the steamy nights. Nothing. It’s like Trina Levine dreamed it, and it hurts like nothing else could.
Except when Hunter cries out in his sleep and Trina comforts him. At those moments, Hunter’s body knows hers, and for a few, brief, blissful moments, Trina’s sure everything will be okay again.
Until morning comes.

Review: Maybe Now by Colleen Hoover

What is more important? Friendship, loyalty or love?
Colleen Hoover and Griffin Peterson collaborate once again to bring fans of Maybe Someday back into the musical world of Ridge and Sydney.
And Maggie.
And Warren and Bridgette.

This is a free follow-up to the NYT bestselling novel, Maybe Someday. It should be read after Maybe Someday and the novella spinoff, Maybe Not in the series.

ebook, 292 pages
Published November 2018 by Wattpad
Series: Maybe #2
Genre: Romance/Contemporary

Kristine's Thoughts:

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely loved Maybe Someday. The emotional connection between Ridge and Sydney was off the charts. I hung on to every word of that book and felt it deeply. It would be an understatement to say that I was just a little excited to revisit the characters from the book. Did I feel like there needed to be a sequel? No. I was content with how it ended and to this day it is one of my favourite Colleen Hoover books. However I am not one to say no to spending time with some of my favourite and memorable characters.

This book was just ok for me. You can't compare it at all to the first one. They are miles apart. I enjoyed Maggie and Jake's story. It started with them and gave me the same emotional flutters that Ridge and Sidney had in the first book. Unfortunately there wasn't enough of their story and way too much of everything else. I actually found Ridge and Sidney annoying at times and that just devastated me because I adored them in Maybe Someday.

I honestly think that a sequel just about Maggie would have been best, leaving the other characters out of it. They had their stories and this book risked changing the opinion the reader had of them. However, I will read anything that Colleen Hoover writes and this book was free so I can't complain about that. Although it wasn't my favourite by her, it was still an entertaining read.
