Review: Wishful Kisses by Krista Lakes

How do you convince the man you love to believe the impossible?
Poor Kimberly has spent her entire life pining for a man that will never return her affections. After spending a fantastic week in the summer of 1990 together, handsome and charming Tony Frontera made a promise that he would return to Kim after Operation Desert Storm. Unfortunately, he broke that promise when he was killed in action.

Kim spent the next two decades trying to fill the hole that he left in her life, but it never happened. Despite a rewarding career, she never found true happiness, the happiness that she should have had with Tony...

When the Fountain of Love suddenly grants her deepest wish, she finds herself back in 1990 in her old body, able to change the hand that fate dealt her. However, the power of the fountain is limited- in order to change Tony's fate, she must do the impossible. Although she had dreamt about saving Tony, she never thought about how she would do it. With only your words, how do you convince your soul mate that you are from the future? How do you tell them to abandon their country and leave everyone they know behind?

Terri's Thoughts

I was looking for a fun short read and I stumbled across this one in the kindle store and I thought I would give it a try.  I am glad I did.

This appears to be a part of a series of books in the Kisses series by Krista Lakes.  From what I can tell the other stories may be full length however this one was a nice short novella.

In 85 pages we see Kimberly and Tony fall in love and then Kimberly remember Tony twenty years later after his death.  The reader then gets to see Kimberly try to change the past by going back in time so that Tony does not die.  For the short length I thought it was well done.

This story in my opinion could have worked very well as a full length novel as the concept had numerous opportunities that could have been explored.  What it did manage to achieve for me was generate some interest in the rest of the series to see if they were the same idea.  I am not sure if the others are similar but I feel the need to check it out.

Blog Tour/Excerpt & Giveaway: Crave by Jennifer Dawson

And, then I see him. My heart slams into my chest, my pulse kicks up, something akin to panic rushes across my skin. He’s staring right at me. My throat dries up like the sierra and every cell in my body knows he’s the one.

I want him. More than I’ve wanted anyone in a long time.

I vow. I crave. I give in.

I used to be a nice, normal girl. I had dreams. Good, happy dreams of a white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a fairytale love that lasts forever. Nobody ever warned me that sometimes, the prince dies three weeks before the wedding.

Like any addict, I swear this time is the last….

Now, I go through my days, a shadow of my former self. I pretend I’m okay, and the people in my life pretend to believe me. But, sometimes, when I can no longer stand the craving, I roam an underground sex club looking for my next hit. It’s dirty and wrong, but I can’t stop, and my only line of defense between them and me, is the rules I’ve designed to keep me safe. The men always abide by my rules. Until I meet him.

And, like any addict, I’m wrong.

I don’t question the instincts that tell me to run. One look at him, standing there, power radiating off him in waves, tells me all I need to know. He will make me crave those happy dreams I’ve left behind. And that is not an option.

Genre: Romance/Erotica

Kristine's Thoughts:

I received an advanced readers copy from the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of this blog tour and in exchange will give my honest thoughts.

Layla has an addiction and like any addict she can only ignore her cravings for so long. She craves pain, punishment and release the way I crave gummy bears. Once it's in my head there is nothing that will get rid of it until I get some. Of course, her addiction is far more dark and dangerous and eats away at her in a way that is impossible for her to ignore.

It is while she is attempting to get her fix that she meets Michael and is instantly drawn to him. She knows he is dangerous and capable of making her feel the things she doesn't think she deserves to ever feel again. The sexual chemistry between the two is so strong and powerful that no amount of will power can keep her away for long.

The pages of this book are filled with sex and lust. It is dripping off the pages and steaming up the room. This is not a boy meets girl story where they fall into bed and make sweet love to each other. It is darker and grittier and capable of making most people blush. It is rough and angry and needy. Fans of erotica are sure to love every lust filled page.

What I really liked about the book is that it wasn't just another sex story aimed at topping the one before it. There was a real dark and sad story that went with it. It was about Layla's struggle to move on from the death of her fiance and the survivors guilt that ruled her every waking and sleeping moments. Although she didn't think she deserved happiness ever again, Michael brought out emotions that she struggled to come to terms with. I really enjoyed this aspect of the story. You could really feel her inner turmoil and her battle to become healthy and strong again.

Although the alpha, dominant male is not my thing, I do enjoy my make believe book version once in a while. I have to say that I kind of loved Michael. The way he handled Layla and attempted to bring her back to life was kind of swoon worthy in my eyes. It really made me route for them all the way.

This is the second book by Jennifer Dawson that I have read and I have to say that I really like her writing style. Her stories draw me in and leave me wanting more. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!

These days Jennifer can be found sitting behind her computer, writing her next novel, chasing after her kids, keeping an ever watchful eye on her ever growing to-do list, and NOT checking out her husband.

Chapter One Excerpt

Eleven P.M.

Two months. Five days. Twenty-one hours.

It’s my new record although I have no sense of accomplishment. No, I’m resigned as I walk down the dark, deserted alley. The heels of my knee-high, black patent boots click against the cracked concrete in echo of my defeat. The distant sounds of the bass thuds in my ears in time to the heavy beat of my heart.

My own personal staccato of failure.

I’m not sure why it’s always a surprise. Maybe because, at first, my conviction is so strong. By now my pattern is long and established—I vow, I crave, I give in.

Rinse. Repeat.

But, like any good addict, I always swear this time is the last.

Of course, I try. My therapist has given me “management tools” to get me through the hard times, and like a good patient, I follow her instructions to a tee—I meditate, do yoga, and write all my crappy feelings in the journal she insists I keep.

Only, it’s backfired and become part of the ritual. When the cycle starts, it’s a matter of time before I end up here.

I’m sure when John brought me to this underground club the first time, he’d never envisioned I’d be back on my own, wandering through the crowds, looking for my next fix. The club reminds me of him, and I wish I could go somewhere else so I wouldn’t be confronted with my betrayal, but I don’t have a choice. There aren’t ads for places like this. Or maybe there are and I don’t know where to look.

Swift and sudden, anger clogs my throat, and for a split second I hate him for changing me so irrevocably, and leaving me so permanently. Fast on the heels of anger, the guilt wells, so powerful it brings a sting of tears to my eyes. In the pockets of my black trench coat, my nails dig crescents into my palms.

I push away the emotions. Exhaling harshly, my breath fogs the air as I spot a hint of the red door that signals both my refuge and my hell. I hear the muffled hum of music that will crescendo once I’m inside to pump through me like a heartbeat.

My pace quickens along with my pulse.

As much as I hate giving in, I can’t deny my relief. Once I step through that door, I don’t have to pretend. I don’t have to be normal.

The tension, riding me all day, distracting me in meetings, making me wander off in the middle of conversations, ebbs. A twisted excitement slicks my thighs as the bare skin under my skirt tingles.

I haven’t bothered with panties. It makes things easier, quicker. Less about getting off and more about taking care of business.

I have on my usual club fare: short, black pleated skirt that leaves a stretch of thigh before my stockings start. A sheer, white silk blouse that’s unbuttoned low enough to show the lace of my red demi-bra. My lips are slicked with crimson and my dark chestnut hair is a tumble of shiny waves down my back.

My outfit is carefully orchestrated. I leave as little to chance as possible.

No leather or latex. I’m not into bondage. Chains and rope do nothing but leave me cold. Once upon a time I loved to be restrained by fingers wrapped tight around my wrists, digging into my skin, but now I can’t handle even a hint of being bound.

I reveal plenty of smooth ivory skin, my clue to guys into body modification or knife play to stay away. I like fear, but not that kind. I want my bruises and scars hidden away, not worn like a badge of honor for the world to see.

My wrists and neck are free of jewelry so the Masters don’t confuse me with a slave girl. I tried that scene once, thinking all their hard play and intense scenes would focus my restless energy and make me forget, but there is no longer anything submissive about me.

I don’t want to obey. I want to fight.

Terri's Thoughts

**I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.  The expected publication date is June 23rd 2015**

This story managed to deliver exactly what I expected from it, no more and no less.  You have the story of two estranged lovers who try to deny their feelings until the point where they don't, at least physically and then emotionally later on.  No surprises with this story.

There were a few steamy scenes for those who like that in the story.  The usual amount of conflict and drama to keep the story going.  Overall it does justice to the formula.

The one thing that I found a little odd was how Gunnar was with his mother.  Here we have a huge MMA fighter who seemingly becomes a polite little child in the presence of his mother.  I have been around several men who treat their mother's well but this seemed almost extreme.  Do men like this actually exist to the point that they are lecturing others to watch their language in front of ladies, still opening doors etc.  It seemed a little extreme.  I do think it is good but not sure how prevalent it still is in today's society.  Kudos to all the moms out there if they are raising boys like this.

Overall an entertaining read.

Blog Tour/Excerpt & Giveaway: Accidentally in Love by Laura Drewry

Ellie Palmer and cops don’t mix, and getting pulled over by Officer Brett Hale—again—doesn’t help. Neither does being forced to take a safe-driving course with him. Brett’s by-the-book attitude leaves Ellie ice-cold, and his rock-hard body won’t change that. Still, the more time she spends with the guy, the more she finds herself warming up to his unexpected charms.

Even though Brett comes off like a boy scout, Ellie has sparked something he wants badly enough to get him to rethink his past mistakes. But when her ex shows up, Brett makes it his mission to keep Ellie safe in the here and now. His gut tells him the guy’s trouble, and Ellie must agree, because she doesn’t complain when Brett pulls her close. To keep her safe, though, he’ll have to choose between breaking her heart . . . and breaking the rules.

Kristine's Thoughts:

**I received an advanced readers copy of this book from Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**

Accidentally in Love is the third book in the Friends First series but can be read as a stand alone. I had the opportunity to read Plain Jayne but did not get the chance to read Prima Donna (#2) before reading this one. It didn't impact my enjoyment at all but remembering all of the wonderful and quirky characters made me wish I had read it. I will definitely be going back and reading it.

Laura Drewry knows how to write contemporary romance and she knows how to write it well. She manages to keep things fresh, new and interesting in a genre that can sometimes be repetitive and predictable. Even though it may follow the same formula as others in this genre it doesn't feel like it because the story draws you in and the characters solidify it. The Friends First series is full of characters that you want to get to know and that  you will fall in love with.

I absolutely adored Ellie and Brett and was in their corner the whole way. Ellie's quick mouth and what I liked to call her "terms of endearment" had me chuckling on a few occasions. I liked her strong, independent attitude even if it was hiding a more sensitive and emotional side. Brett was one of those characters that you can't help but love. His quiet and serious attitude mixed with his good manners, concern and overall nice guy image would be enough to win any girl over even if he didn't smile enough.Their personalities mixed like oil and water but the chemistry was undeniable and I loved every minute of their journey. It flowed nicely and the build up and anticipation was timed perfectly to maximise my enjoyment.

If you are a fan of contemporary romance you won't be disappointed with this one. It is above average as far as I'm concerned in the genre. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Excerpt

Carter took the mound and tossed a slow looping pitch a good six inches outside.

“What’s the problem, Sparky?” Regan taunted. “Did I wear you out back there behind the dugout?”

Catcalls followed from both the field and the rest of the players waiting to bat until Carter laughed and tossed another pitch, this one a perfect shot over the top corner of the plate. Stepping into it, Regan cracked a hard fast grounder between Brett and second base. Diving left, and with more luck than he cared to admit, he managed to get his glove on it, but had to spin before he could fire it to first.

His throw was off, too low and too short, yet somehow, Ellie managed to stretch impossibly far and snapped it up just before Regan’s foot hit the base.

While the rest of the team cheered, Brett waited for Ellie to look at him so he could give her a nod of both appreciation and apology, only she never even glanced his way. In fact, she didn’t acknowledge any of the cheering, just laughed at whatever Regan said on her way back to the dugout.

They rotated positions until everyone got time at the plate and as Nick cranked a liner to left field, the rain finally started and sent everyone running for the dugout. Everyone except Brett and Ellie, who remained at their positions watching the rest of the team take cover.

“Oh, come on,” Ellie cried from out in right field. “It’s just a little rain!”

With a sigh Brett could hear across the diamond, she shook her head and started off the field, heading straight past where he stood near the on-deck circle.

“Ellie?”

She took another couple of steps before stopping and turning to face him.

A thick smudge of dirt ran from the side of her nose down her cheek, and it only got worse when she scraped her forearm across her mouth. Brett punched his free hand in the pocket of his glove and cleared his throat.

“Since we’re going to be playing together, I hope we can keep what happened today off the field so it doesn’t make things difficult for the rest of the team.”

“What happened . . .” A moment’s confusion made her frown before she released some kind of guttural sound that was part choke, part chuckle. “Right. That. Least of my problems right now.”

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing, forget it.” She started to turn away, until Brett spoke again.

“That was a hell of a catch you made earlier,” he said. “Too bad the dumbass playing short didn’t have his shit together.”

Ugh—he’d meant it as a joke, but as usual, he probably sounded clipped or cranky. He started to say as much until Ellie spoke over him.

“Whoa,” she mocked, her left eyebrow lifted in surprise. “I’d heard rumors that the cop had a sense of humor, but who knew it was true?”

Her response caught him so off guard he didn’t know how to respond and thankfully, he didn’t have to because she kept talking.

“Look, Ponch, to hear Jayne talk, you’re like the Derek Jeter of slo-pitch, so hopefully you’ll understand this. Beer league or not, when I play, I play to win, because I don’t know how to play any other way. I also believe in the idea that we win as a team and we lose as a team, so no matter what happens off the field . . .”

She hesitated long enough to give him a pointed look, then continued: “When we’re here, we need to work together, not against each other. We’re all going to make mistakes, but dogging each other isn’t going to do anyone any good. Now, if that’s going to be some kind of problem for you—”

“What? No!” A problem? Was she crazy? She’d just voiced his exact philosophy, and if it had been any other woman standing there, looking that good and saying those things to him, he might have fallen a little bit in love right there in the on-deck circle. Shaking the crazy thought from his mind, Brett forced a swallow.

“Not a problem. That’s, uh . . . good. Yeah.”

“Okay. Next time, though, get your arm behind the throw; I can’t save your ass on every play.” She started for the dugout again, then glanced back over her shoulder and smiled.

At him.

If the rest of the team weren’t already in the dugout, he’d have looked behind himself to see who the smile was really aimed at; since he was the only idiot left out there in the rain, it must have been for him.

Ellie smiled at him.

Not a smirk, sneer, or jeer—a real honest-to-God smile. Warm, easy and natural, like a small burst of sunlight through the raindrops, like the spark of a lit match in a dark cave, like a flash of . . .

Holy shit, man, get a grip.
Brett stayed right where he was, watching her weave her way through the crowded dugout and out the other side to her bike. It wasn’t until Nick gave him a soft shove that he actually blinked, and by that time she was already riding away.

“What’s the matter with you?”

“What?” Even looking straight back at Nick, it took a second for Brett to see him. “Nothing. I’m, um, I’m good.”

“Then don’t just stand there—help me grab the bases.”

Another blink, this one a little longer, then Brett blew out a breath, shook his head, and hustled over to grab third which he tossed into the back of Nick’s truck with the rest of the equipment.

“Thought you said most of the team had never played before.”

“No,” Nick laughed. “I said most hadn’t played together before. Everyone’s played some kind of ball before. Hell, Ellie played . . .”

He paused, then called over to Jayne. “Babe—what level ball did you tell me Ellie played?”

Before answering, Jayne reached inside the front seat of the truck and came back with a covered dish, which she held out to Brett. Then she tucked herself up next to Nick, who opened the side of his jacket and wrapped it around her.

“She was on the women’s national team for a couple years.”

Wow. Well, that explained not only her ability but her attitude toward the team.

“What?” Nick closed the glass door of the truck cap and grinned at Brett. “D’you really think I’d be stupid enough to ask you to play on a team that had no chance at winning?”

Honestly, Brett hadn’t thought about it at all. Nick was his friend, he’d told Brett he needed him on the team, so he’d agreed. Simple as that. Not including the other cops at the detachment, Nick was the first person Brett had met when he’d moved here, and he liked to think he’d helped get Nick and Jayne together. Okay, “help” might be a bit of a stretch, since his actions almost blew their relationship apart, but to look at them now you’d never know it.

Had Brett ever been that happy? He thought he’d been happy with Kerri, but that happy? No. And ever since she’d left, it was like he’d been walking around on automatic pilot.

Until today. Until that exact moment when Ellie looked back and smiled at him.

Ellie smiled at him.

Emmy and Oliver were going to be best friends forever, or maybe even more, before their futures were ripped apart. Terri's Thoughts

**I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher HarperTeen via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.  The expected publication date is June 23rd 2015**

The synopsis for this story captured my attention and I was not disappointed.  I am not sure if I am feeling nostalgic for stories about young love and such but this was exactly what the doctor ordered.

The concept behind the story is simple.  A boy is kidnapped and separated from his best friend, fast forward ten years and he returns.  His best friend is still there waiting for him and now that they are older there are additional feelings leading to romance.  Then there is the emotional issues of trying to heal and move on from what happened.  Do I really need to say more?

In many stories there are characters that stand out on my all time favorite list.  More often than not they are the male characters as they (in my historical reading experience) are usually more dynamic and charismatic.  This book is an exception.  The stand out character to me was Emmy hands down.  I just loved her sense of humor and dry/quick wit.  She reminded me of myself when I am on my A game (which isn't a lot).  She was the glue that formed the foundations of this story.

Another interesting aspect to this story was the occasional exerts of the younger Emmy & Oliver.  It was adorable  as we caught a glimpse of the younger versions of them and the more innocent dynamic to their friendship.  This to me added a crucial element to the story as I felt it told the story of the innocence lost due to the situation and aging.

Anyone who can remember that best friend from their youth that may or may not be still in their life will really appreciate this story.  I recommend this story to those who can look back fondly on the crazy things they did as a child with their equally crazy BFF's.  Oh yes....and fans of romance will also appreciate this story.  And people with extremely strict parents....the list goes on.  I just simply recommend it!

Genre: New Adult/Romance

Kristine's Thoughts:

**I received an advanced readers copy from William Morrow Paperbacks via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**

There was a note to readers at the beginning of the book that stated...

"While you can read this novel without ever having read anything of mine, it is a continuation of stories and a combination of series. Some things will make much more sense if you've read Taking Chances and Stealing Harper, as wll as Forgiving Lies and Deceiving Lies."

I have to agree with the above statement. This was the first McAdams book for me and although I could follow along with Kennedy and Liam's story, it was the secondary characters particularly the parents, that had me confused. There was quite a bit of detailed bits about both of their parents which leads me to believe that previous books told their very confusing and crazy stories. I have to admit that from the details of their pasts that were given in this book it sounded way too busy and confusing to interest me in picking them up.

This book was just OK for me. There were a couple of things that held me back from liking it as much as I wanted to. The first thing was the build up of Kennedy and Liam's relationship. I didn't feel the emotion, turmoil and chemistry as much as I had hoped to. Without feeling the strong connection between the two I found myself not liking Kennedy very much. She came across too whiny, mean and self serving. Now I did eventually warm up to her but by then it was too late for me to really care about the outcome.

What I struggled most with though, was the relationship between Kennedy and Kira and pretty much everything revolving around the two of them. I am a twin so you would think that I would relate to the two of them. I did not. My sister and I are close and I would say that we have a typical "twin" relationship and I can tell you that we would never talk to each other and treat each other the way Kennedy and Kira did. They were quite mean to each other at times and hurtful. Also, within the pages they never really had their own identity. They lived together, worked together (on the same shift) and played together. They were always grouped together. As a twin I can say that I understand that in younger years. You never really have your own identity but by your early twenties you definitely carve out a life of your own. These two did not and it was creepy and a little annoying. Without giving anything away there was also a part near the end that made me want to vomit. Maybe with other twins it could possibly happen but I know for certain that from my twin perspective that there wouldn't even be a remote possibility of something like that happening. It is like an unwritten code. I just found it gross!

I kind of feel like I might have connected more with the story if I had read some of the authors other books first and that it may have affected my thoughts on the book. I don't know??

Review: Whisper Beach by Shelley Noble

From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Colors and Breakwater Bay comes this unforgettable story—reminiscent of Kristin Hannah’s beloved novels—of friends, loyalty, and love as three women who are reunited in the idyllic beach town where they grew up are forced to re-evaluate their bonds

Fifteen years ago, seventeen-year-old Vanessa Moran fell in love and lost her virginity but not to the same boy. Pregnant, desperate, and humiliated, she fled friends and family and Whisper Beach, New Jersey, never breathing a word about her secret to anyone. She hasn’t been back since. Now a professional Manhattan organizer, she returns to the funeral of her best friend’s husband. She intends on just paying her respects and leaving—though she can’t deny she also wants the town to see how far she’s come as a successful business woman. But her plans to make this a short visit fall by the wayside when her girlfriends have other ideas.

Dorie, the owner of the pier’s Blue Crab Restaurant where Van and her friends worked as teenagers, needs help. Dorie’s roving husband spends every penny they make and now their restaurant is failing.

Joe, the boy Van left behind without an explanation, has never stopped loving her. While he’s wary of getting hurt again, he also can’t help wondering what would happen if they took up where they left off.

As the summer progresses and the restaurant takes on a new look, trouble comes from unexpected sources. For Van, this summer will test the meaning of friendship and trust—and how far love can bend before it breaks.

Terri's Thoughts

** I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher William Morrow & Company via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.  The expected publication date is June 16th 2015**

I write my thoughts with mixed emotions.  On the one hand I love a story about estranged friends with secrets coming together to share and heal the past.  On the other hand I had a difficult time with Vanessa through the majority of the book.

I will start with the positive.  I loved the setting of the story.  The town of Whisper Beach New Jersey seemed like a quaint small town where due to its size everybody knew everyone.  I can identify coming from a small town myself.  The unfortunate part for me is that my small town did not reside on the ocean as this one did.

I also enjoyed the cast of characters.  Dorie was the typical "Godmother" to the girls who provided shelter and advise to all of the wayward girls, both in their youth and now as adults.  I am not really sure how her husband was too relevant to the plot however Dorie was a Gem.  Then there was Suze who was so intelligently sloppy it was funny.  I even appreciate Dana with her sharp tongue.  Lastly we have Gigi.  Well, read to make your own opinion.

Were the story fell a little short for me is with the character of Van.  She came from a rough childhood and escaped her past to make something of her life.  This in itself is an amazing feat.  My issue is that for the most part she seemed selfish and entitled because of her horrible past.  This is a pet peeve for me in life as I have encountered similar people.  They overcome a hardship to be become successful and they get so full of themselves and their success that they don't remember where they came from.  It is a fine line between being proud of your success and accomplishments and judging others who have not been as successful.  Throughout the story I felt Van was judging some of the others and using her past as an excuse for pretty much everything.  It made it difficult to be in her corner at every moment of the story.  I found myself going back and forth with her.

That aside it was a story about friendship, acknowledging the past and moving forward from it.  With an eclectic cast of characters it provided an entertaining read.  I enjoy these types of stories and even though I struggled with the main character I found myself entertained and curious to find out how it would end.  Without providing any spoilers I will say that I am glad for the way it ended as I felt it appropriate to the plot.
